Thanksgiving-Style Brownies

I’m really excited about this Thanksgiving twist on brownies! Gooey chocolate, crunchy walnuts, and guess what? Dried cranberries! It makes a luscious treat for Thanksgiving or any time of the year!

Sweet & Simple Projects:

Pipe Cleaner Christmas Tree Ornament

Easy to make pipe cleaner Christmas tree ornament. So cute and a great kids activity!
You can make your own pipe cleaner tree ornament using a just a few simple materials, and the end result is a sweet little tree ready to hang on your real Christmas tree. This is a great craft to do with kids!

Hot & Cold Rice Bag Tutorial

                             Creative Pink Butterfly

A rice bag is probably one of the smartest things one can have lying around  your house (in their designated area). It is also super-easy to make! You can even make any size or shape you want. You can make hand warmers, like A Bee In My Bonnet or a foot warmer like V and Co. Today I am going to show you how I create a shoulder bag. The great thing about this design is that it sits comfortably around your shoulders. You can of course use it for other body parts such as backs, stomaches, feet, etc. It is 40 x 15 cm and is divided into four sections. This prevents the rice from going to one side only

Green Beans with Cranberries and Walnuts

Whether you are looking for the perfect seasonal side dish, or just love green beans, this dish is for you. They are coated in delicious butter and garlic, and then topped with cranberries and walnuts for a dash of sweetness and a bit of crunch. The key to keeping these green beans vibrant and bright is making sure to plunge them in an ice bath (see directions), and completely cool them down before continuing the cooking process.
Cookie Dough Cupcakes | Tackling Life
I knew before even making these that the guys would love them! How can you not like raw cookie dough? And dough without egg makes it safe to eat. Which meant I snuck a little bit while making them

The Reality of Getting Ready With a Child

                                      Winks and Eyerolls

Oh the carefree mornings…back when I was able to walking around as I pleased, take my time to make sure my makeup looked nice and the perfect outfit was picked out. This all seems like a distant dream. Those mornings aren’t around anymore and that’s ok. As a working mom (who is not a morning person), I’m going to tell you about my realities of getting ready with a child.

Mama’s Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding

Mama's Pumpkin Pie Chia Pudding, raw, gluten-free, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, niacin, zinc, soluble, insoluble fiber, add bulk to food, raw cacao powder, raspberry puree, apple sauce, bananas, almond butter, chia gel, substitute for fat, coconut milk, water, dairy-free, processed sugar-free, pumpkin patch, James Whitcomb Riley, poem, quote, when the frost is on the pumpkin, snacks, breakfast, refrigerate overnight, trendy, dessert, health benefits, cozy, autumn, fall, harvest time, recipes, Pinterest, homemade, homemaking, keeper at home, health benefits, lose weight, feeling full, relieve constipation, DSCN1891
Since it has turned all fall-like and cozy-feeling I’ve been making this {raw, gluten-free, dairy-free, processed sugar-free} chia pudding concoction with pumpkin for breakfast and snacks…anything to add more pumpkin to the season! Our visit to the pumpkin patch was just perfect for that crisp autumnal day!

Cocktail: Texas Lemon Drop Martini

If you have an upcoming holiday party or bachelorette party, these Lemon Drop Sugar Cubes are the perfect on-the-go mixer to make this simple Texas Lemon Drop Martini Cocktail. What makes this a Texas Lemon Drop Martini?? The Dripping Springs Texas Vodka of course. This vodka is pure and smooth…making it the perfect pairing in this cocktail.

Ramblings of a Bad Domestic Goddess

The Holiday season is almost upon us. To this day, side dishes play just as an important role as the entrée in our house. Here are twenty-five feast worthy side dishes.

This is such an easy and inexpensive DIY project. You can make your own Chevron Tray on the cheap…or you can choose a different pattern if chevron is not your thing.I was able to use a 40% Off a Single Item coupon at my local craft store…so the tray cost me around $5. The scrapbook paper was under a $1. I had the Mod Podge (decoupage) on hand…but if you don’t you can grab a bottle for $5- $10 depending on the size. I also sealed the wood with poly (optional).

November Beauty Favorites

   Unfading Beauty

My Bare Minerals Ready foundation was running out and was on the search for a paraben free and natural foundation. I loved my Bare Minerals but i was looking for something with a more natural look and not too heavy.

In the beginning i had a love hate relationship with the Tarte airbrush foundation ,the coverage wasn’t so good compared to Bare Minerals Ready  and it didn’t cover much of the redness in my face.

BLUEBERRY CREAM CHEESE PIE

My husband loves blueberry cream cheese pie and every year at Christmas, it’s his one request.
Of course, the boys also have favorites for Christmas, but though their so-called favorites may vary a bit, my husband’s request is always the same.

DIY snowflake necklace – Perfect gift for your girl friend

Vikalpah

Today I am sharing my first post for Christmas this year. It is about making a beautiful snowflake necklace for your sister, friend or your wife /girl friend (If you are a guy reading this post ;)) to gift this holiday season or may be one for yourself. It is so easy to make and you will be surprised “How gorgeous” it looks. If you can’t afford for real diamonds then this is something you should make to impress your girl. I am sure it has more value than the real diamonds if it is handmade jewelry by you.(Don’t you agree ? :))Lets start making!!

Coffee Filter Trees

If you have been following my blog a little, I think you can tell that I like to recycle, up cycle and use materials in new ways.
One of my favorite materials to use is coffee filters.
They are inexpensive and very versatile.
I have used them for many projects.
With Christmas around the corner, I wanted to share an easy project today.
Coffee Filter Trees!
The other day I decided to use some of the fun fabrics I have to make some Christmas throw pillows for the living room.  I have had this Christmas Tree pillow on my Christmas Pinterest board for a long time so I was ready to give it a go.   I got my inspiration from this Christmas Tree Pillow Tutorial I followed on Inspired Honey Bee.  She actually got her inspiration from a tree pillow on Style Me Pretty.  I didn’t follow the tutorial exactly but I do love how they turned out!

Sending Christmas cards should not feel like a chore
Whether you are planning your USA Thanksgiving or not, Christmas comes faster than Rudolph can blink his nose, and if you send out Christmas cards (See one of my most popular posts on this very topic) there is no time to waste.
Last year I shared a few tips on how to make sending out Christmas cards easy instead of a chore that we dread, or worse, that we feel obligated to do. Here’s my updated list:

I’m so Thankful

I’ve recently become not a huge fan of Christmas time, but Thanksgiving really gets me in great spirits! I love Thanksgiving. It’s a great time to reflect on all the things God has blessed me with. So many that I could never fit it into a list…

But I Gave it a Shot Anyway!!

10 Things I am Thankful for This ThanksgivingWP_20130405_026

1. My wonderful husband: He is such a blessing to me and my children! I do not know what I would do without my best friend and the love of my life!

10505380_10203632316202185_380169784626316716_n2) 3 beautiful children: They never let me get bored! I love who they are and can not wait to see who they become!

3) Health: I have been blessed to live in a country that currently gives me the freedom to make my own health choices. I can have my babies at home. I am able to provide my children with nourishing foods. I am able to deny shots that I deem unnecessary for my family. That’s a great thing! If you’re interested in the book that started my whole health journey, buy this book (http://amzn.to/1r5JrDV) It is a great resource!!

4) Godly parents: I had a mom and dad that loved each other and loved Jesus. They were a great example of a marriage that wasn’t 7f592-397338_10151195190908890_1195012329_nperfect but trusted in Jesus in everything! December 21st will be one year since I lost my dad, and I still have not forgotten his example of love!

5) My si21973_1269770757766_7437428_nblings1661263_10201610490773538_1612295373_n: We are a rag-tag group, but we are full of love for each other! I’ve never come in contact with a family that is close as mine. We have times where we want to kill each other, but we ALWAYS love and stand by each other! Losing my brother last December left a big hole, but it was quickly mended by the 3 of us girls coming together and keeping our memories of him alive!

6) My oils: Yes. I said it. Did you think I wouldn’t? I am so thankful for essential oils!! They have been so great for my family. I use them for sickness, recipes, and so much more!

7) Good friends: I have a great group of very diverse friends. They keep me sane and laughing. They love my family and take care of us if we ever need it. God knew what he was doing when He gave me my wonderful friends!

8) Good television: I am thankful to be able to enjoy watching TV with my husband. God delights when we find joy in little things and I thank Him for great television like Lost, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Walking Dead, and many more shows!

9) Online shopping: More specifically, Amazon and Vitacost. A lot of my shopping is done right in front of my computer and I am so grateful to have that access. It’s such a first world problem that I get frustrated when I am $3 short of getting free shipping! What a problem to have!! Join Amazon Prime – Watch Over 40,000 Movies & TV Shows Anytime – Start Free Trial Now

10) Jesus: I cannot say enough about Jesus! He saved me when I didn’t have any desire for a savior! He loves and accepts me just as I am.

[1] And you were dead in the trespasses and sins [2] in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—[3] among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. [4] But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, [5] even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—[6] and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, [7] so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:1-10 ESV)

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? I would love to hear in the comments!

Girly Multitasking: Make the Most of Your Workout

I feel better about life when my nails are painted.  It’s such a silly “first-world” thing that I’m almost ashamed to admit it…almost.  But I say that because I know I’m not alone in that fact.  I realize all of my male readers are currently rolling their eyes at me or clicking off my blog, BUT before you do, hang with me a second.

I Am Officially a Curler

To be honest, that title is a stretch.  In reality,  I am now a member of a Friday night mixed curling league.  So I am assuming it is official.
For those readers who are from the Southern US or other parts of the Globe, you may have no idea what I am talking about.  For starters, being a curler has absolutely nothing to do with HAIR!

Pumpkin Pie Sugar Cookies

Look no further for a kid-friendly treat this fall because this recipe for Pumpkin Pie Sugar Cookies is not only delicious, but these cookies are adorable! Get all the fall fun of pumpkin pie without grossing out your picky eater. These cookies are the perfect addition to your Thanksgiving dinner, school party, or work party!

WHIMSICAL CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS

All The V’s

We’re not a family of serious people, for the most part. I mean, just look at the decor on my desk: a Minecraft “torch,” a Doctor Who thermos that started leaking and was repurposed as a pen holder, a desk calendar from Someecards that currently says “Congratulations on not being sterile,” and there are very tiny painted characters from the Half Life video game series lined up under my monitor that my husband painted for me, because he’s awesome at painting incredibly tiny things and is also silly and nerdy like me. We’re dang near sole mates, I tell ya. Silly, nerdy, dorky sole mates.

Make Your Own Princess Hair Tie Holder

Gym. Craft. Laundry.

I am still in the middle of my decluttering project but I had to share this next craft with you guys.  Pea has long, luxurious, snarly hair so I always put it up.  If you have a little girl with long hair or long hair yourself you probably have the same problem I have…

Snickerdoodle Sugar Scrub

You Brew My Tea

Snickerdoodle Sugar Scrub
Who doesn’t love the smell of baked goods? Sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and other spices being warmed up in the oven creating an irresistible smell. They make an amazing scent for homemade body products too- Like this delicious Snickerdoodle Sugar Scrub.   This scrub exfoliates gently and leaves your skin soft, moisturized, and fragrant. I like to keep a jar of this on the shelf next to the shower and use it a couple times a week for a quick spa experience. It also makes a wonderful homemade gift in a pretty jar with a simple tag attached to identify the scent.  What is your favorite body product scent?

Baked Cinnamon & Sugar Pumpkin Donuts

An easy, baked recipe. And what is great about this recipe if you don’t have a donut pan, just use a mini-muffin/cupcake pan and make these into donut holes. YUM!

With the cinnamon and sugar coating and the pumpkin and spiced donut, you seriously won’t be able to get enough.

I have always thought that donuts were hard to make, that was until I made them.

This fall will be known in our family as the “Donut Year” well become recently I have only made a few.

Including:

Infused Water

Robyn’s View

You know that you are supposed to drink those 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. But what are you to do when you can’t stand the taste of water? Maybe you think it lacks flavor at all and doesn’t interest you; maybe you think it has an off flavor that you can’t just get past because of the treatment to make it drinkable. Whatever the reason you are turned off by water, you can improve the taste and the nutrition of your water by infusing it with fruit.

Rustic Log Holiday Card Display

Anything & Everything

Pretty soon those beautiful family Holiday cards from your friends and family will start filling up your mailbox.  Will you have somewhere to display them when they do?  Well now you will.  I have always been the one that just places them all over the fridge, just crowding up space and leaving it looking even more cluttered than it already is.  So when I stumbled upon some branches from my neighbors tree that he had just trimmed, I jumped on the opportunity to take a few off his hands :)

The Importance of Daddy Time

In celebration of my husband’s recent birthday, yup my sister and husband’s birthdays are 4 days apart. November is a party month for us 🙂 Anyway, I thought I would take a break from the typical mommy post to talk about the importance of daddy time. My little guy has always had such a great relationship with my husband and I am so thankful for that. I am extremely blessed that I have a husband who from day one has been very hands on. This is going to sounds bad to admit but here we go…I didn’t even change one of little man’s diapers until he was three weeks old and my husband went back to work. Daddy award is deserved right there!

Mason Jar Gift Bags Tutorial

Do you like to give gifts in mason jars? There are so many ideas for what to put inside-candy, jams, cookie mixes, candles, even sewing kits. Here’s how to wrap them up so the contents are a surprise: cute fabric drawstring bags!

Totally Rad 80’s Things Your Kids Need to Know

Before streaming, dvd’s, or cd’s.  There was the 80s.  Back when using your tape recorder to make a mix tape off the radio was cool.  A time when real people worked at the radio station, and you could call and dedicate a TOTALLY AWESOME song from White Snake.  Madonna was as scandalous as we got, and regular people still smoked cigarettes on TV.
Boy have times changed for the good and bad!  But you all know that as a child of the 80s you have a responsibility to share the neon pink, big-haired, blue-eyeliner days of the past.

Thanksgiving Decorations

I love decorating for the holidays!  Each holiday is so different that it’s fun to come up with new things. I’m in love with my THANKS sign. It was so simple to do but makes a big statement. First, I sprayed my board with a texture spray paint. It is so cool, it looks completely different that regular spray paint

DIY: Super Easy Snowflake Pipe Cleaners

Living Frugal with Erika

I love to find simple crafts to do indoors during the colder months. If you are looking for something fun, try this out! Not only is it a simple and fun craft, you can use them to decorate the house! Our kiddos love to see their decorations on our house! You can pick up the supplies needed at most any store and will not break the bank for this fun craft!

Bee’s Wax Christmas Ornaments

My cousin Amy brought a crock pot full of bee’s wax on her visit last weekend.  We wanted to make a few projects with it.  When I went downstairs to find candle wick to make candles, I found a Christmas chocolate mold instead and I thought to make ornaments with it.

Yellow Coconut Cake with Cocoa Buttercream Frosting

yellowcoconutcakeflowers
Tender yellow cake is layered with fluffy cocoa buttercream, and all gently sweetened with the floral notes of raw honey.  Fresh milk, eggs with richly colored yolks, and dense coconut flour combine to make a cake of substance that won’t throw you into a sugar-spiral.  It is nice to enjoy your food without having to pay the price for it later!

Slouchy Gray + A Fun Announcement.

How are your layering skills? Fall is a good time to get some practice runs in, before winter takes hold and we’re all bundled up three sweaters deep. Use this transitional period to figure out how to mix pieces that keep you warm without overdosing on the bulk.

Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup
Um, there’s nothing better than a nice warm bowl of creamy chicken noodle soup to chase away the frore, fall chills. I usually make this creamy soup every fall (and winter) for my family. And it always turns out delicious! This soup will seriously warm your family up this fall (and winter), and it’s also perfect for those chilly days when you just cuddle up and watch TV with your family (um…who doesn’t love cuddling up with their family, right?). Your family won’t believe you didn’t spend all day chopping, stirring, and cooking this creamy and delicious soup. You can use whatever veggies you like — but I like to use carrots, celery, and an onion mix. You can use rotisserie chicken, baked chicken breast or leftover grilled chicken from the night before. Sounds super simple, right? That’s because it is.

Fall Chalkboard Sign

Don’t you just love it when a project turns out even better than you anticipated? This one sure did! I’d had this picture in my mind of a chalkboard sign with a pumpkin on it for quite some time and I found the perfect plastic platter at Dollar Tree for the base.

Friendly Public Service Announcement: This recipe is fully loaded. Fully loaded with all the decadent sorts of ingredients you would expect from an Ultimate Chocolate Brownie – if you are on a diet, anti-sugar, anti-butter, anti-chocolate, anti-eggs, and really you just like raspberries then I kindly suggest you buy some fresh raspberries and do not read any further, doing so will be harmful to your blood pressure if not your health ;-) This recipe is that good it comes with a warning – haven’t done that before! It is a sometimes treat, all things in moderation, moment on the lips a lifetime on the hips yadda yadda yadda………
te he he ;-)
Picture
I grew up eating coconut right from the shell. Just as you see pictured here. Mmmm. It was kept on ice and opened when sold. The coconut water is so delicious. Double Mmmmm. And the flesh is really soft and sweet. Triple Mmmmm. Alright enough reminiscing.
That someone wasn’t me. I lie to my kids all the time.  I’m not just talking about the trifecta of deception:  Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.  I don’t creatively bend the truth.  I straight up lie like Pinnochio.  Am I ashamed?  No.  Lying to my kids saves my sanity, not to mention time and money.
Starbucks-Inspired Cinnamon Dolce Latte Recipe | www.pinkrecipebox.com
Let me set the scene for you. It’s the middle of June, 90+F in Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida. The sun is beating down, we’ve been riding roller coasters for hours on end and our clothes have literally begun to drip with sweat. It’s time to re-hydrate. What drink do we choose to freshen us up on this scorching hot day. Why, a round of Cinnmon Dolce Lattes from Starbucks, of course.

Cornucopia Snack

It’s that time of year where we celebrate all that we have been blessed with! Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year! I love all things fall, football, comfort food, and my birthday and Thanksgiving has them all!
This cornucopia snack is easy to make and the perfect sweet, salty snack to enjoy this Thanksgiving season!

Paper DIY Christmas Ornaments

GirlfriendsAreLikeShoes

handmade tree decorations

I found this adorable musical note paper at Michael’s and knew right away that I wanted to make some Christmas ornaments out of it.

I looked for a template to use and found this tiny box template at Craftsy in the free downloads.

I didn’t print the template out on my musical note paper, instead I edit it to plain white and just print out  a copy I could use as a stencil.

How to Make Mini Bolts for Storing Fabric

A Vision to Remember All Things Handmade Blog

I have this thing, weird as it may be, about being able to easily see ALL of my fabric.
Its a little difficult at times, especially with all different sizes of fabric.
This is the solution that I use for my fabric that is close to a yard to 2 or 3 yards.

Creamy Lamb StewUpstate Ramblings

Fall just seems to lend itself to soups and stews, and one of my favorite meats to use in stew is lamb.  So when I was asked to create a lamb recipe by the American Lamb Board I made this rich and creamy lamb stew, inspired by Indian flavors.

Whenever I wanted to sew something bigger than a hat or a ball, there’s that additional cumbersome work that needs to be done BEFORE any cutting and actual sewing can happen: tracing the large pattern from the template onto the fabric. Oh, I hated that! I wanted to sew, not to trace and draw and then observe how much I missed the desired pattern line…

Until I found out about this easy solution to do it:

How to Make Your Own Baking Powder

Raia’s Recipes

Baking powder. It’s the white fluffy stuff that makes your pancakes and biscuits rise, and it can be found in the kitchen of most baking moms across the country. The Wonder and Many Uses of the 5 Gallon Bucket

I have many loves when it comes to natural living and the 3 R’s. One of my most thrifty loves is the Chick-Fil-A pickle bucket. If you didn’t know we used them post pickle you would probably think we have a serious pickle obsession, because our house is FULL of green buckets!

My love for the 5 gallon buckets prompted me to write. I love sharing information that has helped my family in hopes that it can help yours! In this post, I will explain some great around the house uses for the bucket and how to tell if it’s regular or food grade!

What is so great about the bucket??

I’m so glad you asked, imaginary audience member. There are a ton of reasons to have one in every color! Here are a few of the ways we use them:

1. Cloth diaper pail: When we were getting ready for babies and looked into a diaper pail for their diapers, we felt like we DSCN1119got punched in the gut by the price of those things! 40 dollars is way too much to be spending on something so basic. The thing that was supposed to be so special was the fact that the lid kept odors out, yet all the reviews talked about how the lid DIDN’T keep the odors out. So began our love affair. My husband brought home our first bucket with a lid and to our surprise, it worked amazing! The lid is wonderful for keeping the smell at bay! We keep it in a very small bathroom and nobody even notices until they get curious about the random pickle bucket and open the lid!

2. Laundry detergent pail: We make our own detergent in extremely large amounts. Like “only make it twice a year” amounts. This is a perfect container to fit it all in and it has a handle which makes it easier to move around.

Boo Boo Chicken has the darker colored comb.

3. Chicken feed pail: First of all, meet our sweet pet chickens Boo Boo Chicken and Mickey.

We buy our chicken feed in bulk and ferment it. For that reason we have to take the feed out of the bag it came in. This pail is perfect because I can put the lid on and leave it beside the chicken fence. Very convenient.

4. Rain water collector: We don’t have one of those really nice $100 rain barrels. We have the very handy bucket with a screen on top to keep out leaves, nuts, etc. It can collect 5 gallons at a time and we’re able to use it to wash the car, give the animals water, and (when I’m feeling adventurous) wash my hair.

5. Compost bin: This is something fairly new to use, since we have just started small gardening. This is nice and big to hold great compost materials. And if you get good worms you won’t have to worry about not being able to spin it (so I’ve read).

6. Actual food storage (shocker): We actually don’t participate in #6. We just aren’t to that point where we want to buy 5 gallons worth of oats. Maybe one day. But if that’s you, that’s great! These cheap and sometimes free (depending on the store or restaurant) buckets are perfect for someone trying to stock up for emergency preparedness if it is indeed food grade. Which helps me segway into…

How can you tell if it is food grade??

It’s important when using a 5 gallon bucket for actual food storage to make sure it is food grade. Not all plastics are safe for food. Some can even be toxic. You need to learn how to tell the difference before you start using them.

1. The easiest way to know if it is food grade is to look at the bottom of the bucket.DSCN1126 If the recycle symbol has a 1, 2, 4, or 5 it is safe for food. Your even safer bet is to make sure it has a 2. This type of plastic if made specifically for storing foods called high density polyethylene.

2. Another way to make sure your bucket is food grade is to make sure you get a bucket previously used in a food store. Some bakeries that get large amounts of icing or flour will be willing to donate or sell to anyone asking. Plenty of restaurants usually end up throwing theirs away and wouldn’t mind donating or selling. Firehouse subs has been known to sell their 5 gallon buckets for $2 and donate the money to their public safety foundation.

There are other uses for the bucket I’m sure. The secure lid would make it good for smelly laundry. Great toy storage. It could be used as a trash can. The possibilities are limitless!!

Got any other ideas for uses? Tell me in the comments below!!

So You’re Thinking of Becoming Minimalist (and a Wake Up Wednesday Link Up)

Minimalism can be a scary word. We like our stuff and our routines. To alter that makes us very uncomfortable. So what is minimalist living? It’s not making sure you have a certain strict amount of things or that you go without something essential. That’s not the point. It’s living stress free. Not letting your things control you. It’s freedom to not fret over having the next best thing or more than the neighbors.

There are many benefits of minimalism. One of the most important to me is the beneficial effect it has on children, found here.

I don’t mean to say that it’s bad to have material possessions, but we should not let it lead to bondage, unhealthy relationships, and idols. Theminimalists.com summed minimalism up in one sentence: Minimalism is a tool used to rid yourself of life’s excess in favor of focusing on what’s important so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and freedom.

So does this sound like something that interests you? Then continue reading to learn steps to start your journey to minimalism.

First- Decide what is excess. Some examples of what my family found as excess are: Smart phones, cable, more than one television, conventional toilet paper, too many toys (especially ones with batteries), and a low amount of outfits and shoes per person. One area I really struggle with is cloth diapers. They’re like potato chips or tattoos for me. I can’t stop. I had to step back and ask myself, “How many do I REALLY need”. Basically, decide what you define as necessity. If you really think it’s a necessity to have a television in every room of the house, then roll with it. If you decide it’s a little much, then move to the second step.

Second- Rid yourself of those extras. Give toys to Goodwill. Sell your expensive electronics. If you decide a basic talk and text phone is sufficient for you, make some money by selling your smart phone. Put that money toward debt or a $1,000 emergency fund. A couple of years ago we decided to downgrade from a 51″ screen to a 21″ since we only use it to watch movies and we were able to finish paying off a credit card! What could you do with an extra minimum payment a month? If minimalism hasn’t lost you yet, continue to step 3.

Third- Maximize (didn’t think you’d see this word, huh?) family time. Turn off the television. Put down your cell phones and tablets. Spend time with the people you love. One of the most detrimental effects of excess is the damage it can do to a family. No communication, a dad that disconnects as soon as he hits the couch, children that go straight to their rooms to troll social media-these are the things that can create tension and discontent. Reintroduce yourself to your family. Game nights are a fun tradition. Eating dinner at the table as a family is a great thing if you can all be home at the same time. It is important to not let screen time be your only source of entertainment.

Lastly- The most important thing when trying to become minimalist is to remember to take baby steps. Unless your family is a lover of all things extreme, it is best to make changes a little at a time. Start out with just limiting phone usage. After a while, you might realize you don’t need all the excessive features of a smart phone and be ready to make the switch to a basic. The boys and I use cloth wipes instead of toilet paper, but my husband still prefers paper. That is just fine! There is no need to force him to get rid of something he views as necessity. One day he may decide to make the switch himself, and we will only need it for guests. Baby steps keep you from losing your sanity and keep the rest of your family on board!

If this sounded interesting to you, give it a try and let me know how you do. If you have any more suggestions on getting closer to minimalism, comment below.

The expression, “to live within your means” gets thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean?
If your “means” is your income, then it could encompass everyone from people just getting by each month, to those who have substantial savings.

A garden doesn’t have to be big, time-consuming to construct, or conventional.
One of my favourite and essential skin care items is facial oil.
My skin is normally combination/oily. But it’s winter and I don’t have the funds to go on a tropical vacation, so my skin is super dry and dehydrated.
Enter facial oil.

Here is a super EASY DIY. When I first came across this idea I instantly knew I had to try it! I love the look of tinted Mason Jars…Turquoise and Green seem to be the hot colors right now, but you can actually tint mason jars any color you like.

Deja Vu is My Current View

Being A Wordsmith
During the month of October last year, I had a lot going on:
I finally published my novel, Acting On Her Behalf, after 16 years.
I made the switch from Blogger to WordPress after 10 months of blogging.
My friends, Dino and Margaret from Detroit, celebrated their wedding anniversary in New Orleans with me and Hubby.
The Deuce needed 2 Halloween costumes: 1 for his school’s theme and 1 for trick-or-treating in our subdivision.
Let’s fast forward to October 2014…

When God isn’t pleased with sharing…

Today’s is a tough subject and I am preaching to ME! You all are welcome to listen in…
This isn’t just about gossip, although gossip is a huge problem.
This isn’t just about talking behind our brother or sister’s back, but that is wrong too. We all are guilty.
I’m not just touching on the subject of “Oh, let me tell you about ‘Jim and Judy’ so you can ‘pray’ for them…”, when the time spent telling the prayer request could have been spent actually praying. Ouch.

The Search for the Last Flower

So here at the Smith House, it’s all about holiday truffles and bonbons!
And over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing all sorts of fun recipes, gift ideas, and ways to share your own beautiful homemade treats.

Fall Decorations 2014

Home Is Where The Heart Is

When do you decorate for Fall? Do you decorate for a general Fall theme or do you change it up for Halloween and Thanksgiving? Most of my decor for Fall is of pumpkins and leaves and I add the color orange to my decor colors. Majority of my Fall decor is from my Mother-in-law. Each year, I like to change up my decor little bit from the year before. Plus I like to add to my Fall decor collection.

Perfect Coconut Pie Crust {Easy}

Deep Roots At Home

This coconut pie crust recipe is soooo easy; it looks amazing when served and tastes amazing, too.  It has only two ingredients (magical words, right?).
As we prepare for sweet family times of Thanksgiving around the dinner table, I decided to think ahead about the pies I might want to make. To make a very pretty pie and to save some time for myself as well, I decided to do several pies this year with a coconut pie crust. This low carb, gluten-free crust will be helpful for family and friends watching ingredients, as well.
You can add your family monogram to an entire set  or personalize one with the first initial of each guest at your table, using them like a place card, and then a pretty keepsake to take home that can be used in other ways.  You can make up a half dozen in less than 30 minutes and make a big impression on your guests.
