I’m so Thankful

I’ve recently become not a huge fan of Christmas time, but Thanksgiving really gets me in great spirits! I love Thanksgiving. It’s a great time to reflect on all the things God has blessed me with. So many that I could never fit it into a list…

But I Gave it a Shot Anyway!!

10 Things I am Thankful for This ThanksgivingWP_20130405_026

1. My wonderful husband: He is such a blessing to me and my children! I do not know what I would do without my best friend and the love of my life!

10505380_10203632316202185_380169784626316716_n2) 3 beautiful children: They never let me get bored! I love who they are and can not wait to see who they become!

3) Health: I have been blessed to live in a country that currently gives me the freedom to make my own health choices. I can have my babies at home. I am able to provide my children with nourishing foods. I am able to deny shots that I deem unnecessary for my family. That’s a great thing! If you’re interested in the book that started my whole health journey, buy this book ( It is a great resource!!

4) Godly parents: I had a mom and dad that loved each other and loved Jesus. They were a great example of a marriage that wasn’t 7f592-397338_10151195190908890_1195012329_nperfect but trusted in Jesus in everything! December 21st will be one year since I lost my dad, and I still have not forgotten his example of love!

5) My si21973_1269770757766_7437428_nblings1661263_10201610490773538_1612295373_n: We are a rag-tag group, but we are full of love for each other! I’ve never come in contact with a family that is close as mine. We have times where we want to kill each other, but we ALWAYS love and stand by each other! Losing my brother last December left a big hole, but it was quickly mended by the 3 of us girls coming together and keeping our memories of him alive!

6) My oils: Yes. I said it. Did you think I wouldn’t? I am so thankful for essential oils!! They have been so great for my family. I use them for sickness, recipes, and so much more!

7) Good friends: I have a great group of very diverse friends. They keep me sane and laughing. They love my family and take care of us if we ever need it. God knew what he was doing when He gave me my wonderful friends!

8) Good television: I am thankful to be able to enjoy watching TV with my husband. God delights when we find joy in little things and I thank Him for great television like Lost, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The Walking Dead, and many more shows!

9) Online shopping: More specifically, Amazon and Vitacost. A lot of my shopping is done right in front of my computer and I am so grateful to have that access. It’s such a first world problem that I get frustrated when I am $3 short of getting free shipping! What a problem to have!! 10) Jesus: I cannot say enough about Jesus! He saved me when I didn’t have any desire for a savior! He loves and accepts me just as I am.

[1] And you were dead in the trespasses and sins [2] in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—[3] among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. [4] But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, [5] even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—[6] and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, [7] so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:1-10 ESV)

What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? I would love to hear in the comments!

I’m Not a Proverbs 31 Woman

If you attend a church in America, the chances are very strong that every Mother’s Day you have endured a sermon telling you the lie that you need to do better at being more like a Proverbs 31 woman. Be kinder. Be Stronger. Be wiser. Do better. Try harder. You find yourself leaving church exhausted on the one Sunday of the year you expect to find rest, which is what you should be finding every Sunday of the year to begin with!

The problem with Proverbs 31:10-31, is that it is misused. Using the bible to abuse Christians does not coincide with the message of Jesus Christ.

The Proverbs 31 woman is a mere model of what the perfect wife and mother should be. PERFECT. “You therefore must be perfect, as your Father in Heaven is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

Perfect Faith (31:26): There are many days that I don’t have perfect faith- correction- EVERY DAY. That I don’t speak with confidence in God. That I don’t trust Him wholly and give others good advice in perfect faith.

Perfect Marriage (31:11-12): I come up short in this department way too often. And I don’t think I’m alone.

Perfect Mother (31:28): I fail my children daily. I don’t play with them enough. I don’t always use kind words. I yell a lot.

Perfect Homemaker (31:27): I’m a terrible housekeeper. Don’t catch me off guard if you want to see vacuumed floors. I don’t always have hot meals on the table. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and we get take out! Even when I do clean house and cook awesome food, it isn’t always with a happy heart.

Perfect Service (31:20): Speaking of happy heart, I don’t always enjoy helping others. And even when I do help others, I’m not excited about it. That’s not exactly “pleasing to the Lord” (I’ll save that lovely exhausting phrase for another day).

God didn’t demand that we do our best. He demanded perfection.

As you can see, I’m not doing so hot! The beautiful news that set me free from the performance-based mindset is that I don’t have to be perfect! Jesus died in place of my lack of perfection. Not my righteousness, but His righteousness. He was my perfect marriage, perfect mother, perfect homemaker, perfect service, my perfect Christian. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ”. Romans 5:1.

Mothers, please don’t fall into the trap that your identity is found in how well you can handle your life and family. Stop worrying that you must now perform for God since He so graciously saved you. It was gracious. Not a loan that you need to pay back.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to strive to be this wife and mother. The problem is making this the standard. Jesus is the standard. The Proverbs 31 woman isn’t perfect. Only one was perfect. She is an imperfect woman that loves her family and is ready and willing to find perfection in Jesus.

Favorite Scripture Challenge

I was tagged to do the favorite scripture challenge on Facebook. I normally don’t participate in these challenges (mostly because I’m never tagged. Apparently nobody wants to know what 5 pictures of myself make me feel beautiful OR wants to see me dump icy water on my body). But I sent the pain below, and decided I would accept this challenge and put a geeky blogger spin on it.

My 5 Favorite Scripture Verses

1. For FREEDOM Christ has set us free; stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Galatians 5:1 ESV

2. A man’s steps are from the Lord; how then can a man understand His way?

Proverbs 20:24 ESV

3. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

Ephesians 2: 4-5 ESV

4.  Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.

Proverbs 31:25 ESV

5. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1: 17 ESV

Tell me your favorite verse (or verses) in the comments below.

Whether you are a believer or not, leave it to Veggie Tales to
teach you a beautiful life lesson.
This morning Jon Mark and I were listening to the thankfulness song from Madame Blueberry on my phone while we were eating breakfast. That’s his favorite to watch but I’ve never really paid attention to it. I’m so discontent in my life and don’t even realize it.

1 Thes. 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Colossians 3:15-17 says, “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

I expect my 2 year old to understand these verses, but don’t apply them to myself. I have a beautiful house; I’m already looking for a new one. I have an awesome smart phone; I’m already drooling over the latest model. I have a great grocery budget every week that allows me to shop at better grocery stores; I complain that it’s not enough for me to be able to get the brands I want. I have a Kindle; why can’t I have the Kindle Fire!!?

I could continue that list all day, but for the sake of preserving my reputation I will stop 🙂

I wring my hands all day wondering when my next blessing from God will come, when God COMMANDS me to sit the blessings He already showers me with every day of my life!

I expect my sons to be okay with only one piece of candy instead of a whole bag, yet they watch me pout because my mop doesn’t automatically squirt out soapy water like my friend’s!

What an example to set for my children. The great news is that we serve an amazing God that loves and ACCEPTS His children despite our discontentment! He sent His Son to die so that we could be loved no matter how selfish we are! Not because we are good, but because GOD IS GOOD!

If you’ve never read One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp I urge you to pick up a copy. It doesn’t deny that God wants to bless you, but it puts into perspective what being blessed is. It puts into perspective what grace is. It’s the lasting presence of God that should bring you joy! The amazing grace that we absolutely don’t deserve, but he pours on us everyday! I pray, for myself and everyone, that we can be thankful and content in a world full of sadness and “me, me, ME”. And I also pray that we can remember even when we aren’t thankful and content, it doesn’t change God’s never changing love for us!

“I thank God for this day
For the sun in the sky
For my mom and my dad
For my piece of apple pie!
For our home on the ground,
For His love that’s all around
That’s why I say thanks every day!
Because a thankful heart is a happy heart!
I’m glad for what I have
That’s an easy way to start
For the love that He shares,
‘Cause He listens to my prayers,
That’s why I say thanks every day!”

Thanksgiving is Here!
